Nine nights of music, dance and lights
Navratri means “nine nights”. Many Hindu families celebrate it with music, dancing, lamps and special food. The tenth day is called Vijayadashami or Dussehra. This year it falls around 20 October.
Gujarat: People dance Garba and Dandiya in big circles, some with sticks.
West Bengal: Durga Puja, with beautiful pandals, music and lights.
Tamil Nadu and Karnataka: Families set up Golu: rows of dolls on steps.
Keralam: Vidyarambham: little kids write their first letters, often in a tray of rice.
India’s own map in the sky
How does a phone map know where you are? It listens to satellites high above Earth. India has its own team of map satellites, called NavIC. Navik means sailor, the person who finds the way at sea.
NavIC needs at least 4 working satellites, but right now only 3 work well. So India’s space agency, ISRO, plans to launch a new one, NVS-03, on a big rocket in mid-October.
A machine that goes around Earth, high up in space.
