In 1956, Keralam had 5 districts. A district is a part of a state, with its own main town. Today there are 14! We live in the one at the very bottom, Thiruvananthapuram.

A state of readers

In 1991, Keralam became the first state in India to be called fully literate. That means almost everyone could read and write!

Rivers and rain

Keralam has 44 rivers! Most of them flow west, from the hills down to the Arabian Sea.

Our language

In 2013, Malayalam was named a classical language of India. That means it is very old, with lots of old writing.
