The mice who set the elephants free

A very old story from India’s Panchatantra, told to children for more than a thousand years.
News Nibbles Edition 2 · Saturday 17 October 2026· Page 15 of the paper

1. Long ago, many mice lived in an old, empty town by a lake. They were happy there.

STOMP!

2. One day, a herd of elephants walked through the town to drink at the lake. Stomp, stomp! Many mice got hurt.

Please!

3. The mouse king was small, but brave. He went to the elephant king and asked, “Please take another path to the lake.”

4. The elephant king listened. “You are right, little friend. We will walk another way.” The mice cheered!

5. Later, hunters caught the elephants in strong rope nets. The elephants pulled and pushed, but they could not get free.

6. The elephant king called for help. Hundreds of mice came and chewed through every rope. The elephants were free!

The lesson: be kind to everyone, big or small. Even a tiny friend can help you one day.
